Long before Dutch architect and craftsman Gerrit Thomas Rietveld designed Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum, he created the Red and Blue Chair (1918). A genuine masterpiece, it embodies the primary colors, straight lines, and rectangular planes of Neoplasticism – an artistic philosophy coined by Piet Mondrian as part of the Dutch De Stijl movement. Made from birch plywood with a seamless birch veneer, the high-backed armchair’s flat surfaces and monochrome spaces are grounded in simplicity. It was Rietveld’s hope that his furniture would one day be mass produced, so each piece of wood is of a size readily available at the time. Over a century later, Red and Blue can be seen in museums and galleries all over the world. Made in Italy.
